Racism in Dietetics
“Untangling” by Olivia Barthelemy
“Untangling” represents the challenges of dismantling the white, Eurocentric dominance of healthy eating that reinforces the racialization and oppression of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour. The knot in the piece represents both the feeling of stomach discomfort and health issues, as well as the meticulous labour in untangling this deeply rooted injustice in the world of dietetics.
Land Acknowledgement
The members of this network reside throughout Turtle Island and on the original lands of numerous First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. This includes unceded territories as well as land on which Treaties were made. We acknowledge the land and waters as central to any study of food and health, and we acknowledge the historical and present-day harms and acts of violence committed by the nutrition discipline and the dietetics profession towards Indigenous communities, and all others disenfranchised by settler colonialism on Turtle Island and beyond. We respect the Treaties that were made and commit to ongoing learning and action to redress the on-going legacy of the colonial history of Canada. We recognize the importance of putting truth before reconciliation, and to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities.
